UPDATE A man wielding a knife today held up a Citibank branch in Westport on the Norwalk line and escaped with an undetermined amount of cash, police said.
The robbery occurred at about 1:10 p.m. at Citibank, 399 Post Road West at the Norwalk line, police said. The robber showed the knife and passed a note demanding money, said Capt. Sam Arciola.
A short time later police recovered evidence from the robbery, including a trench coat, approximately a mile from the scene at Sylvan Road North and Post Road East, indicating the robber had a vehicle, said Arciola. He said the knife had a black handle, but it was not clear whether it was among items found.
The suspect was described as a 6-foot black man in his late 30s or early 40s, clean shaven with a muscular upper body build, wearing a long, black trench-style coat and blue hat with orange writing. He reportedly escaped on foot toward Norwalk, according to police.
The suspect made off with an undetermined amount of cash, police said.
Police were looking through surveillance photos of the incident, Arciola said.
Officers from Norwalk with their K-9 unit and State Police assisted, he said.
Police asked anyone who may have seen the suspect leaving the scene or has any additional information to contact the Westport Police Detective Bureau at (203)341-6080.
