Locke was chosen out of 1,500 nominees nationwide for the honor held in New York City at The Times Center on West 41st Street. She was nominated by parents Ramin Ganeshram and Melissa Augeri who called her “without question the Librarian of the Century!” (See their nomination letters here.)

Among the many Westport supporters who attended was Maxine Bleiweis, director of the Westport Public Library.

According to the ALA website, nominations were open to all librarians working in public libraries, schools, colleges and universities.

Fifty librarians nationwide have won the award since it began in 2008, the site states. In the nominations, library patrons told stories of how their librarians made a difference in their communities.

Each librarian honored received a $5,000 cash award.
