Book Sale: From Mass Market to Signed Collectibles

By James Lomuscio

With more than 100,000 books, CDs, DVDs and records at record low prices, Richard Lowenstein expects people to be lining up early for this weekend’s 22nd annual Westport Library book sale that begins Saturday at 9 a.m.

“One young man called me and said he was interested in a specific book and said he would be coming here after work Friday night, camping out,” said Lowenstein, a longtime volunteer who, with Mimi Greenlee, has overseen the sales for years.

The good news for him, as well as other early birds that include booksellers, collectors and book lovers, is that the library will open its restrooms and coffee concession at 7 a.m., Lowenstein said.

The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Monday’s offerings are half the listed price, “and Tuesday, they’re free, and a donation is very much appreciated,” Lowenstein said.
