Westport’s Earthplace, the Nature Discovery Center, said today it will provide private transportation to its after school enrichment program beginning Aug. 25, the start of school.
The announcement was in response to the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) recent ruling that the Westport Transit District (WTD) was noncompliant in offering after school shuttle service, as it has for the past 30 years.
The WTD and town officials had hoped to get a stay until January, so they could provide the service this fall for 200 families that rely on the buses for myriad after-school programs around town.
Earlier this week, however, the FTA’s regional coordinator in Boston informed First Selectman Jim Marpe that no continuance would be permitted.
