Westport police today arrested three persons after two of them attempted to purchase gas and cartons of cigarettes with a fraudulent gift card.
Police responded to Cumberland Farms, 690 Post Road East, at about 4:30 p.m. after a clerk told police two men attempted to make the purchases but were unable to complete the transaction and left.
The clerk managed to get a partial license plate number and a description of the vehicle, which was relayed to patrol cars nearby, police said.
A short time later, Officer David Scinto spotted the car on I-95 southbound near exit 17. Police found 11 fraudulent gift cards in the vehicle along with 24 cartons of cigarettes, police said.
