UPDATE A leak in a 1,000-pound underground propane tank forced the closure today of Imperial Avenue between Gault Avenue and Laurel Lane and evacuation of several dozen neighbors.
Emergency personnel responded to a construction site at 121 Imperial Ave. at 3:39 p.m. after a contractor’s dump truck drove over the tank, damaging a valve, according to Assistant Fire Chief Michael Kronick.
They put two protective hose lines into place to protect two adjacent structures and 10 area homes were evacuated, affecting 25 to 30 residents on Imperial Ave and Ledge Meadow Lane, he said.
The leak was not able to be stopped due to the valve being damaged so personnel began a four-hour operation to burn off the remaining gas in the tank, Kronick said.
