Failed Bridge Shuts Down Rail Traffic Again

UPDATE It was a nightmare ride on Metro-North’s New Haven Line today for Westport commuters as a bridge failure in South Norwalk disrupted rail service during the evening rush hour for more than five hours for the second time in eight days.

Metro-North said shortly after 3 p.m. it was unable to provide service in either direction at South Norwalk because of the inability to close the 118-year-old Walk Bridge. At 6:20 p.m. it said limited service resumed with restricted speeds, and at 8:16 p.m. it said service was on or close to schedule.

Many passengers on the scheduled 3:27 p.m. train from Westport to Grand Central, which arrived in Westport 11 minutes late, grew tired of waiting for promised shuttle buses at East Norwalk and began walking to the South Norwalk station.

“A Metro-North representative here was very kind, but the promised buses have yet to show up and we are walking,” said Dave Matlow, WestportNow associate editor and photographer, who was on the train.
