UPDATE Power problems hit Westport’s Main Street area late today, causing traffic lights to go out and stores to close early on the hottest day of the year. The outage lasted about four hours.
Connecticut Light & Power Company said power had been restored to the area at about 8 p.m. It earlier had reported 220 Westport customers were without power. A CL&P supervisor told fire officials the company had to shut down power to the entire area as it worked to resolve the problem.
Initially, some stores and residences had partial power only to lose it later. The outage was due to broken insulators at the nearby substation at Main Street and Canal Street, said Lissette Andino, a spokeswoman for CL&P. She said the company was trying to determine why the insulators failed in the 90-degree heat.
Starbucks was among stores that turned customers away, saying they were closed until power was restored. Members at the Westport Weston Family Y were told to leave because of no power, according to a resident.
