Hundreds of family members and friends filled the pews at Westport’s historic Green’s Farms Church today to honor and celebrate the life of Allen A. Raymond, a.k.a. Mr. Westport, who died at 91 May 1.
The 90-minute service led by the Rev. Jeffrey Rider, pastor, began with the hymn “Just a Closer Walk with Thee,” its last line resonating poignantly, considering Raymond’s nearly lifelong relationship with his coastal town and his home on Compo Cove.
“Guide me gently, safely o’er to thy shore, dear Lord, to thy shore,” the lyrics resounded throughout the church.
Raymond, who summered in town with his parents beginning in 1923, often said “that when I grow up, I want to live in Westport.”
