More Details Disclosed in Flood Grant Aid

By James Lomuscio

The 29 Westport homeowners who have seen their shoreline or riverfront properties trashed by floodwaters in recent years may have a shot at a federal grant paying from 75 to 100 percent of the costs for reconstruction, elevation, demolition, even acquiring properties, Fire Chief Andrew Kingsbury said today.

Elaborating on an announcement made Tuesday (see WestportNow May 13, 2013), Kingsbury reminded Westporters that the deadline for applications is June 9.

“This is a national program, something they (FEMA) do on a semi-regular basis,” said Kingsbury, who also serves at the town’s emergency management director. “We’re competing against communities in all the United States and its territories for the funding.”

Kingsbury, who must submit the applications, noted that only homeowners covered by a current national flood insurance program (NFIP) are eligible to apply for FEMA’s Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) grant.
