UPDATE (adds family-supplied obituary) Susan Walton Wynkoop of Westport, former president of the Westport Historical Society (WHS) and one of the first women to be hired as an FBI special agent, died April 7 of pancreatic cancer. She was 60.
Wynkoop stepped down from her WHS post in January after a two-year term.
She was born May 26, 1953, in Huddleston, Va. to Margaret Saunders Walton and the late Wyatt Henry Walton, Jr. She was a graduate of Stanton River High School and Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va, where she majored in sociology.
After a brief career in banking, she joined the FBI in 1979 where she remained until 1990.
She worked in Charlotte, N.C., Miami, and New York, where she was assigned to the Joint Bank Robbery Task Force. One of her first cases was the October 1981 $1.6 million Brink’s robbery in Nanuet, N.Y. in which two police officers were killed. It was also in New York that she met her future husband, Morgan “Dutch” Wynkoop.
