A gearbox malfunction caused the Bluebird Express ski lift at Mount Snow in Vermont to come to a grinding halt today, leaving 306 skiers dangling, including Westporter Debbie Kowalsky, 49, a ski resort spokesman said.
“Around 12:50 we did have a mechanical issue with the Bluebird Express on the uphill climb,” said David Meeker, adding that trained Mount Snow staff were immediately deployed along the entire lift line to lower skiers from the chairs.
Kaela Kowalsky, Kowalsky’s 16-year-old daughter, said her mother was cold and a bit shaken but not hurt. She said her family regularly goes to Mount Snow each winter.
According to Meeker, the harness evacuation took 90 minutes,“about 3.3 guests per minute.”
