UPDATE A federal report out today found what Metro-North Railroad itself acknowledged two weeks ago – that its emphasis on on-time performance came at the expense of safety.
The report, the result of the “Operation Deep Dive” investigation from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), also criticized employee training.
“The findings of Operation Deep Dive demonstrate that Metro-North has emphasized on-time performance to the detriment of safe operations and adequate maintenance of its infrastructure,” the report said. “This led to a deficient safety culture that has manifested itself in increased risk and reduced safety on Metro-North.”
The report comes in response to the Dec. 1 derailment of a Metro-North passenger train as it neared the Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx, killing four and injuring dozens of other passengers.
