The Westport Board of Education today announced the establishment of “school security and safety committee” at each of its eight schools effective April 1.
The announcement comes on the heels of the board’s unanimous vote Monday night for the net appropriation of $160,000 for new security lock sets on interior doors at each school.
Elaine Whitney, school board chairwoman, said the gross appropriation, which will have to go for final approvals before the Board of Finance and Representative Town Meeting (RTM), is $200,000 with a 20.7 percent reimbursement.
“We have taken active steps to enhance the safety and security of our students and staff for more than a year, and at Monday’s meeting we announced a number of steps,” said Whitney.
