An overflow crowd of more than 300 gathered at Westport’s Christ & Holy Trinity Church today for an emotional goodbye, with a touch of New Orleans-style jazz, to Westporter Michael D. Goodgame, 20, killed in a Minnesota car crash along with two Ultimate Frisbee teammates from Carleton College.
Mourners filled the pews to capacity and others watched on closed circuit television in nearby Branson Hall as family, friends and relatives came to pay their respects to the 2011 Staples High School graduate. He died Friday when an SUV in which he was riding collided with a truck on an icy road in Northfield, Minn. In addition to three dead, it also left two other teammates injured.
Members of the Carlton College Ultimate Frisbee team and their coaches were among the mourners, coming in late and quickly rushing off at the end to attend two more funerals in the days ahead. The Rev. Whitney Z. Edwards, head rector of Christ & Holy Trinity Church, asked mourners to stand as they entered.
Pews were filled with those from all walks of Michael’s life, as well as those of his two older brothers, Sam and Clayton, and his parents, Dan Goodgame, a prize-winner journalist and author, and Marcia Logan, communications coordinator at the Westport Library. Some Staples friends wore swim and dive team jackets—Michael was captain of the Staples team and also swam at Carleton.
