Heavy Snow Fells Mailboxes

By James Lomuscio

For Westport, it’s been a heavy snowfall today, so heavy that mailboxes slammed by the white stuff have toppled as snowplows cleared roads. Image

“This is heavy stuff,” said Public Works Director Stephen Edwards about the seven to eight inches of snow frosted with frozen rain.

“The snow comes off the plows and knocks over the mailboxes, and there are many of them down,” he added. “We’re not responsible. With the light stuff this normally doesn’t happen.”

Edwards said that 25 Department of Public Works (DPW) employees have been on the road since 2:30 a.m., “and we’ve been essentially just working.” This evening they will be out putting down several hundred tons of salt.
