RTM Approves Additional Levitt Cost Request

By James Lomuscio

Westport’s Representative Town Meeting (RTM) tonight voted unanimously to approve $249,587 to cover additional costs and possible new contingencies in the construction of the new Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts. Image

Already approved by the Board of Finance, the amount does not involve any town monies. The approvals were needed to move funds raised and contributed to the town by the Friends of the Levitt Pavilion from a holding account to the town’s Municipal Improvement Fund for the Levitt Pavilion, said Stuart McCarthy, Parks and Recreation director, who is overseeing the project.

“This is a bookkeeping mechanism to take money that has been provided to the construction project by the Friends of the Levitt Pavilion and to appropriate that into the expenditures account so that it is available for the town to proceed with the project,” he said.

McCarthy said there were two “pieces” to the request—$97,587 related to the original budget for the project, originally set at $6.7 million, and $152,000 which will be forwarded to the town by the Friends upon approval of this appropriation as additional contingency funds. He added, however, they hoped they would not have to expend the additional contingency monies.
