The obstacles were great todayin Trumbull as the Staples boys soccer team faced St. Joseph. The Wreckers were missing four starters – including co-captain Jack Scott—to injury and illness.
But the scrappy Stapleites prevailed 2-1. Their two goals came in a 1:10 span, midway through the second half. First Andrew Puchala finished Steven Sobel’s long throw – but not before Charlie Leonard and George Kokkalis hit posts, and the ball bounced around the goal for a while. Then Sobel’s cross caromed off a defender’s head, for an own goal.
The Cadets halved the deficit on a shot from the corner, but Noah Schwaeber’s excellent goalkeeping, plus solid defense from Puchala, Kokkalis, Connor Weiler and Kenji Goto, earned them the victory.
The Wreckers are now 3-1-1. They host Central on Monday (4 p.m.) in another tough FCIAC match.
