Two Escape Serious Injury in Weston Road Rollover

WestportNow.com Image
Wet road conditions contributed to an accident on Westport’s Weston Road north of the Merritt Parkway around 10 a.m. today. A Stratford driver and his female companion escaped serious injury when he lost control of his pickup truck, spun around and rolled over on the side of the road between Sipperley’s Hill Road and Lyons Plains Road. The driver said he applied the brakes when the car in front of him slowed down. The driver and passenger in the car promptly parked and went to the aid of the pickup’s occupants. The female passenger in the pickup truck was treated by Westport EMS personnel but declined hospital transport. The truck was towed from the scene. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Westporter Judith Kealey (3rd r.) played the role of Lady Bracknell joining nine other actors in the opening night performance tonight of Oscar Wilde’s classic play “The Importance of Being Earnest” at Town Hall in the Westport Community Theatre’s 232nd major production. The play, which premiered in1895 in London, is set in England during the late Victorian era. Blumenthal Warns on Gift Cards

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal today warned consumers to be especially wary of purchasing gift cards this holiday season because of the precarious financial condition of many large retailers and other businesses in bankruptcy and called for legislation to secure gift card value.

“In light of staggering consumer losses—more than $100 million this year alone—I will propose and advocate legislation requiring retailers to establish a special, separate account for money from purchases of gift cards, so the money can be held in escrow,” Blumenthal said.

“An alternative would be a state fund similar to the Home Improvement Guaranty Fund to provide for refunds in case of retail failures with money from fees paid by retailers.

“In the meantime, consumers can avoid January surprises by giving cash instead of cards, guaranteeing the full value of the gifts. Cold hard cash may be crass, but it’s forever.”

Greenwich Rolls Over Staples 27-0 in Season Finale

WestportNow.com Image

The Staples Wreckers put up a valiant fight but made mistakes that couldn’t overcome a fired up Greenwich team today as the Cardinals shut them out 27-0 in the final football game of the season.

A crowd of about 2,500 was on hand for the Thanksgiving Day morning FCIAC contest between the perennial rivals at Cardinal Stadium.

Greenwich, which crushed the Wreckers 37-0 last year in the FCIAC championship, ended the season 8-3 overall, 8-1 conference. Staples, which had made the state tournament seven straight seasons, ended 6-5 overall, 4-5 in the conference.

“Everything that had been hurting us all season showed up again today,” Staples head coach Marce Petroccio said. “I was happy with the effort. The kids played hard, but you just can’t make the kind of mistakes that we did against a team like Greenwich.”
