New York Times sportswriter and author Jim Cavanaugh of Wilton told an audience at the Westport Public Library tonight that the New York Giants of the 1956-1963 era was ”the smartest football team ever assembled.” “Giants Among Men,” the writer’s newest book, is about the team that, according to Cavanaugh, “made New York City a football town and changed the NFL forever.” The team was comprised of such well known players as Andy Robustelli, Y.A. Tittle, Frank Gifford, Sam Huff, Kyle Rote, Pat Summerall, Dick Lynch and others. Team personnel included assistant coaches such as Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry. Town to Begin Curbside Leaf Pickups Starting Monday
Public Works Director Stephen Edwards has announced that Westport will conduct its annual curbside leaf collection program beginning Monday through Dec. 1.
“Any leaves placed on the curbside during this period in biodegradable paper bags will be collected by the Westport Public Works Department,” said Edwards. “Leaves placed in plastic bags will not be picked up. The compost process can not handle plastic bags.”
Residents living on private roadways must place their bagged leaves at an intersecting town roadway.
Public Works crew will pick up throughout the entire town several times during the collection period. A final pass will be initiated on Dec. 1 and take approximately one week. Any properly bagged leaves put out before Dec. 1 will be collected, Edwards said.

The come-from-behind win gave the Wreckers their 25th league title in 50 years, but the first outright one since 1996. In 2000 and 2006, the Westporters tied in the finals and shared the crown.
It was Staples’ second two-goal victory of the season over Greenwich, which fell 2-0 in Westport earlier this month. (See WestportNow Oct. 14, 2008)
Greenwich controlled play in the first half, and got on the scoreboard 10 minutes before intermission. But, just as in the semifinals two days earlier, the Wreckers went on a second-half tear.
