Fireworks: ‘The Largest Party in Westport’

By James Lomuscio

From rosettes to streamers to colorful explosions that included smiley faces and little green men, Westport’s annual fireworks display at Compo Beach tonight did not disappoint the estimated 10,000 persons who seemed to fill every square foot of sand.

The Fireworks by Grucci show launched from a barge a half-mile off shore was sponsored by Westport’s Police Athletic League (PAL) and the Parks and Recreation Department and underwritten by Melissa & Doug, the Wilton-based educational toy company owned by Westporters Melissa and Doug Bernstein.

And with Fairfield and Norwalk having shorefront fireworks the same night, some said they were hoping for a fireworks viewing trifecta.

“That would be great,” said Morgan Brodie, a Westport volunteer firefighter stationed with other first responders near the lifeguard building.

Compo Fireworks Draws Thousands

WestportNow.com Image
A crowd estimated by police at 10,000 watched the annual Independence Day fireworks tonight at Westport’s Compo Beach. The weather was clear and in the upper 60s as pyrotechnics—for the first time—lit the skies during the singing of the national anthem at the line “and the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,”  and continued moments later for about 20 minutes. An Early Fireworks Arrival Every Year

WestportNow.com Image
Westporter Rob Arnold was at Compo Beach at about 6 a.m. today to secure his picnic spot near the cannons— a ritual he says he and his wife Sherlyn Celone-Arnold have done every Compo fireworks day of their 11-year marriage. “We expect over 35 friends and family members to join us later in the day,” he said. “Sherlyn buys about 15 fireworks parking tickets and hands them out. The number of tickets she buys seems to get progressively larger each year.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE)

Info Sought on Woods Grove Road Visitor

WestportNow.com Image
This bird appeared in a yard at Westport’s 9 Woods Grove Road Thursday evening, and resident Janet Beasley wants to know if anyone recognizes it. She said it allowed her to approach it and talk to it. It was gone this morning but then appeared in a tree as the discovery was made of a newly laid egg near her front door. She said Peter Fraboni at Earthplace thinks it is a chukar partridge, a domesticated species, which is why it let her approach it. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Janet Beasley for WestportNow.com

Installation of the new Westport Arts Center exhibition of photographs and paintings by the renowned artist Eric Fischl was completed today. The show, curated by WAC Artistic Drector Helen Klisser During (l), opens Friday, July 10 with a 6 to 8 p.m. reception. Fischl is considered one of the most influential figurative painters of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The showcased works are a unique aggregation of his early photographs and paintings from 1982-2008, representing his distinct figurative style. The exhibited works come from the Hall Collection and the Eric Fischl Studio and are a rare opportunity to see the works outside of these collections. The exhibit runs through Sept. 5. Judge Rejects Latest Gupta Bid to Nullify Conviction

A federal judge in Manhattan has rejected Westporter Rajat Gupa’s latest bid to nullify his insider-trader conviction which landed him in prison a year ago to begin a two-year sentence.

U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff ruled today that Gupta’s request to piggyback on a court’s ruling in another case was “both too late and too little.”

The ruling wiped out the insider-trading convictions of two financiers in December.

Gupta, 66, is serving a two-year prison term after his 2012 conviction on conspiracy and securities fraud charges.
