Firefighters pulled her from the water a short time later and a search was launched for her husband, according to emergency workers at the scene. He was found floating in the river about an hour and 20 minutes later. Their conditions were not known.

Diners from the riverside The Whelk Restaurant on Riverside Avenue heard the woman’s screams and alerted police at about 7:39 p.m. Emergency workers located a car in the water on the other side of the river off the state boat ramp near the I-95 Bridge.

Police and fire units converged on the area, and eventually pulled the woman from the water and brought her ashore at the Saugatuck Rowing Club. A frantic search was then started for her husband.

The Westport Winter Farmers Market today inaugurated a seed exchange program. Lori Cochran-Dougall (r), market director, helped Tynne Love (l) of Fairfield, and Katie Braja of Norwalk as they looked over the seeds. Said Cochran-Dougall: “It is estimated that up to 90 percent of our food derives from, or is dependent upon, seeds and that 80 percent of the world’s seeds are controlled by multinational corporations. We’ve launched the new seed-saving program to take back control of our food system.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) WestportNow.com photo

Westport’s Top Cop Hasn’t Lost His Instinct for Bad Guys

Foti Koskinas may be Westport’s police chief, but he has not lost his touch as a street-smart cop.

That instinct for recognizing bad guys was at work Thursday—his 45th birthday—as Koskinas was at the Greens Farms Railroad station checking on some projects there.

In uniform but not wearing any body armor, he spotted a vehicle with a blinker on, engine idling, and the driver laid back in the seat

“The chief checked on the operator, and as the window rolled down, he immediately smelled the odor of marijuana,” said Lt. David Farrell.

Jeffrey Chirillo, 36, was charged with first-degree larceny and offering to do home improvement without a registration upon his arrest on a warrant Thursday at the Milford Police Department, Lt. David Farrell said.

“The victim paid Chirillo $32,579 in cash and checks since Oct. 8, 2016,” Farrell said. “As of mid-January, Chirillo had not started any work at the victim’s residence nor has he provided any of the material the victim has paid him for.”

Chirillo was held in lieu of a $75,000 bond, and he is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Tuesday, March 7.

Comings & Goings: Vespa Restaurant Shuttered

WestportNow.com Image
Westport’s Vespa Restaurant, 2A Post Road West in the National Hall Building, has not been open for business since mid-February, and there is no sign on the door. Its voicemail message says reservations are still being accepted, but calls to the number and building owner Greenfield Partners were not returned. The 120-seat Italian casual dining restaurant opened two years ago in the long vacant ground floor space. After the building converted to a 15-room luxury hotel in 1993, there were several restaurants on the ground floor, but they gave way to office space in 2005 before Vespa opened. Food for Thought With Author Jane Green

WestportNow.com Image
Westport best selling author Jane Green was at the Westport Library tonight sharing stories about how she wrote her first cookbook. “Good Taste: Simple, Delicious Recipes for Family and Friends.” “Food and cooking have always been a part of our lives,” she said. “I’m fearless. Mostly my efforts were very good. Sometimes they were very bad.” She said to improve her skills, she graduated from the French Culinary Institute in New York and then started to put some recipes in her books. Green showed off an illustration of a pumpkin gingerbread truffle that was her mother-in-law’s recipe. “It was fantastic,” she said. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Phyllis Groner for WestportNow.com

Spicer: Malloy’s Immigration Policy Ignores the Law

By Ana Radelat

www.ctmirror.org

Washington — White House press secretary Sean Spicer today took aim at Gov. Dannel Malloy, saying the Connecticut chief executive “chooses not to follow the duly passed laws of this nation” in telling the state’s police forces they don’t have to cooperate with the Trump administration’s new push to increase deportations of undocumented immigrants.

“The idea that Governor Malloy would not want the law followed as enacted by Congress or by the Connecticut legislature in any fashion seems to be concerning, right?” Spicer said. “Whether you’re a governor or mayor or the president, laws are passed in this country and we expect people and our lawmakers and our law enforcement agencies to follow and adhere to the laws as passed by the appropriate level of government.”

The press secretary’s remarks, made in response to a “Skype question” from a Connecticut journalist, were a reaction to Malloy’s release Wednesday of a memo to state police departments that said, “Law enforcement should not take action that is solely to enforce federal immigration law.”

“Law enforcement is not required to collect information regarding an individual’s citizenship or immigration status and there is no state or federal mandate to do so,” the governor said.
