Connecticut, U.S. Unemployment Rates Were 4.7% in February

By Mark Pazniokas

www.ctmirror.org

The Connecticut unemployment rate rose from 4.5 percent in January to 4.7 percent in February as the state posted a net loss of 1,600 jobs, nearly all in the private sector, the state Department of Labor reported today. The U.S. unemployment rate also was 4.7 percent.

A job sector with some sensitivity to the weather was the hardest hit: the leisure and hospitality industry shed 3,200 jobs. The trade, transportation and utilities sector lost 1,900 jobs, with retail cutbacks being the biggest factor, the DOL said.

Those losses were partially offset by gains of 3,100 jobs in education and health services, 1,200 in construction and 900 in professional and business services.

The jobs gain of 5,700 reported in January was revised upward to a gain of 6,500 jobs.

WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 5 Court of Oaks

WestportNow.com Image
An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 5 Court of Oaks, off Hickory Drive, off Morningside Drive North, is in process. Built in 1930, the two-story colonial has 1,400-square feet and is situated on a .36-acre property. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Real Estate Report: Sales, Median Price Up

By Judy Szablak

Special to WestportNow

Westport’s real estate market has not been this active for quite a long time.

WestportNow.com Image

In fact, closed sales are up from the first quarter of last year, and the median sale price is up by an impressive $200,000.

The current buyer activity is higher than we have seen for quite some time, and may possibly facilitate a nominal rise in property values.

Although the seasonal spring market is fueling part of this increase in activity, a mostly mild winter also gave us a wonderful base to start from, and a great head start on the season.

Steinberg: Malloy Teacher Pension Plan ‘Not Going to Happen’

WestportNow.com Image
State Rep. Jonathan Steinberg (r) told a meeting of the Westport Democratic Town Committee (DTC) tonight that Gov. Dannel P. Malloy “doesn’t have the votes” to push through his plan to make municipalities responsible for paying a portion of teacher pensions. “It’s not going to happen,” he said, adding that Democrats will have to find revenues elsewhere. At the same meeting, Board of Education Chair Michael Gordon said the board will seek full or partial restoration of the $1.67 million cut from its budget last week by the Board of Finance. “There’s not a scenario in the world that we could sustain a $1.67 million cut” without seriously impacting children’s education, he said. The finance board will consider the request at its Wednesday, April 5 meeting.  (CLICK TO ENLARGE) WestportNow.com photo

Granger at the Movies: ‘Beauty and the Beast, ‘The Belko Experiment’

By Susan Granger

Special to WestportNow

“Beauty and the Beast” is Bill Condon’s hybrid live action/digital remake of the “tale as old as time” — with sumptuous special effects and enhanced character back stories.

WestportNow.com Image

Set in rural France in 1740, it introduces brainy Belle (Emma Watson) whose academic father, Maurice (Kevin Kline), has been imprisoned in the Beast’s labyrinthine castle.

Because he was once a spoiled young Prince, spurning pleas for assistance from an old lady/witch, the ghastly, horned Beast (Dan Stevens) has been cursed until he can find true love.

Eager to escape the confines of her provincial village and unwelcome romantic advances by boorish, boastful Gaston (Luke Evans), Belle offers to exchange places with her beloved father.

It will be moderated by CNN anchor and Westport resident Alisyn Camerota, according to library officials.

Directed by Kim Snyder and produced by Maria Cuomo Cole, the film chronicles what followed the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting “and never-before-heard testimonies to tell a story of the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting of school children in American history,” the announcement said.

Himes: Manafort, Stone Likely Witnesses in Congress’ Russia Probe

By Ana Radelat

www.ctmirror.org

Washington — U.S. Rep. Jim Himes said today Connecticut natives Paul Manafort, a former Trump campaign manager, and Roger Stone, a self-described Trump campaign consultant, are likely to be key witnesses as the House Intelligence Committee continues its investigation of Russian hacking and the U.S. elections.

“I certainly would put him at the top of the list,” Himes, D-4th District, said of Manafort, a New Britain native.

As far as Stone, who comes from Norwalk, Himes told reporters, ”He had a bizarre ability to predict what Wikileaks was going to do next.”

Last summer, Wikileaks released hacked e-mails of the Democratic National Committee that may have hurt Hillary Clinton’s efforts to win the White House.

Police: Dispute Over Snow Removal Leads to Arrest

A large police response to a Main Street shopping plaza today on an initial report of an armed robbery turned out to be a disturbance over snow removal that led to discovery of a firearm and the arrest of the owner of a wine bar, police said.

Once police sorted out what happened, they arrested Sammy Alanz, 41, of Trumbull, owner of the Vine Wine Room, 190 Main St., on charges of threatening first-degree and assault third-degree, said Lt. David Farrell.

He said a 911 call at about 9:30 a.m. indicated a gun may be involved in the incident, which a police dispatcher then told responding officers was not an armed robbery but an assault.

“The victim reported a man, later identified as Sammy Alanz, pushed him to the ground during an argument about snow removal,” Farrell said.

WestportNow.com Image
U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, today questioned FBI Director James Comey at the outset of a committee hearing looking into Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election.
