The incident began at about 3:21 a.m. when K-9 Officer James Loomer spotted a black BMW in a northwest Westport neighborhood where there had been an increase in overnight car burglaries and stolen vehicles, police said.  The car had been reported stolen the night before.

Loomer attempted to stop the vehicle, but it drove out of the area at a high rate of speed, said Lt. David Farrell. A short time later, Officer David Perez spotted the vehicle on Post Road West near Lincoln Street, he said.

Police units attempted to stop the vehicle as it traveled on Saugatuck Avenue, but it again fled and entered I-95 northbound with police in pursuit, he said.

GOP Cuts Off Dems Revolt

By Ana Radalet

www.ctmirror.org

UPDATE Washington — House Republicans early today pulled the plug on a revolt by Democrats led by Connecticut Rep. John Larson and civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis by adjourning in the middle of the night for the long July 4th break.

Larson and a group of about 20 Democrats, including all of Connecticut’s House lawmakers, seized control of the chamber Wednesday morning and said they would not relinquish it until GOP House leaders allowed votes on gun safety legislation.

But House Speaker Paul Ryan, who called the Democratic sit-in on the House floor “a publicity stunt,” was not moved. He scheduled key votes on bills that would fund the U.S. response to the Zika virus and military construction next year for 2:30 a.m., then adjourned the House for the holiday two days before it was scheduled.

The move to adjourn the House until July 5 angered the protesting Democrats, who cried out “coward,” “shame, shame,” and continued their chant of “No Bill, No Break.”

Real Estate Report: Repeat Buyers Moving Market

By Judy Szablak

Special to WestportNow

There is an interesting sales trend occurring in Westport this year, and it reflects a unique similarity with some of what the National Association of Realtors is reporting on a coast-to-coast basis.

WestportNow.com Image
Featured Home: This home at 25 Flower Farm Circle is $3,795,000. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Photo courtesy of William Pitt Sotheby’s- Westport

Over the last six months in Westport, there have been four price ranges that have enjoyed the most activity. Those ranges are between $700-$750,000, $1.2- $1.3 million, $1.6-$1.7 million, and lastly, $2.25- $2.5 million.

What is striking about these ranges is that first time Westport homeowners begin the trend at the first level, and each subsequent tier could easily be considered a move-up range from the previous one.

Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors said, “This spring’s sustained period of ultra-low mortgage rates has certainly been a worthy incentive to buy a home, but the primary driver in the increase in sales is more homeowners realizing the equity they’ve accumulated in recent years and finally deciding to trade-up or downsize.

Susan Granger at the Movies: ‘Central Intelligence,’ ‘Now You See Me 2,’ ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja…’

By Susan Granger

Special to WestportNow

If you’re really desperate for yet another odd-couple caper, consider “Central Intelligence,” a fast-paced froth that’s almost immediately forgettable.

WestportNow.com Image

Mild-mannered Calvin Joyner (Kevin Hart) is a disgruntled accountant who married his teenage sweetheart (Danielle Nicolet) yet yearns for the glory jock days when he was Senior Class President.

As his 20th high school anniversary looms, Calvin re-connects with Robbie Weirdicht (Dwayne “The Rock”  Johnson), a shy, sensitive soul who remains grateful to Calvin for a singular act of kindness when he was the once-obese victim of cruel shower-room bullies – shown in flashback with inventive CGI.

When now-grown Calvin and Robbie - now known as Bob Stone - meet for a drink, they bond again. But then a CIA bigwig (Amy Ryan) shows up at Calvin’s house, informing him that Bob is actually a former undercover agent gone rogue after killing his partner.
