Youths Sought for New Police-Youth Club

The Westport Police Department and Westport Youth Services are looking for students in grades 8-10 for a new Westport Police-Youth Club, an announcement said.

The club’s aim is to enhance communication and foster a better understanding between the two groups, it said.

Funded through a grant award from the CT Office of Policy and Management and its Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee, the club will include monthly meetings, team building, and community service opportunities for youth and Westport police officers to work together.

By bringing students and police together in a nonenforcement capacity for meaningful discussion, the group hopes to continue to strengthen a healthy community with a foundation of mutual respect, the announcement said.

WestportNow.com Image
Edward F. Gerber, past president of the Westport Historical Society (WHS), today led a walking tour of the Kings Highway North Historic District. The tour gave history buffs an opportunity to learn about one of the town’s oldest settled areas with some homes dating to the mid-1700s. At one stop, Marc Lotti (l) owner of the 1760-built house at 96 Kings Highway North, provided a history of the house as well as a description of ongoing renovations that maintain its historical integrity. Not a Teardown But a Deconstruction on Juniper Road

WestportNow.com Image
Jim Conboy and Michele Lamothe, owners of the house at 5 Juniper Road, off Compo Road North, decided that instead of tearing down their 1,600-square foot, 1955-built ranch, they would remodel. And instead of bulldozing the part to be remodeled, they hired a deconstruction company to take it apart piece by piece. They are pictured at the house today as pieces were taken apart. According to Lamothe, “It will be a green renovation - -solar, rain water collection system, radiant heat.” She said all the contents will be reused, repurposed or recycled with only the sheet rock ending up in the trash. Workers today remove a window from the house at 5 Juniper Road, which is undergoing a descontruction prior to a renovation. Homeowners Jim Conboy and Michele Lamothe hired North Haven-based New England ReUse for the job. This is the company that performed the deconstruction of Geiger’s Garden Center at Morningside Drive North. The rebuilt house will have 3,000 square feet and be ready in early 2017. According to Conboy, the four components remaining are the foundation, floor, walls and framing. “We are the first customer of our own dismantled components—we are reusing rafters 2 inches by 8 inches and several feet in length as the roof over our master bedroom,” he said.
