Friendly Whale Stars in Town Hall Screening

Westport’s Town Hall auditorium tonight hosted a screening of the critically acclaimed 2011 documentary “The Whale.” Sponsored by the Westport Cinema Initiative, which seeks to bring a movie theater back to Westport, and the Staples High School Green Club, it is about a friendly whale who gets separated from his pod at 2 years old and pays frequent visits to residents living along Nootka Sound on the west side of Canada’s Vancouver Island. Role Reversal for Weekend Woman’s Club Art Show

The Westport Woman’s Club this weekend revives a long tradition after a 30-year hiatus –- an art show featuring local artists. Curator is local artist Miggs Burroughs (l), in a rare role reversal pictured with Helen Klisser During, an exhibiting photographer who usually does the curating at the Westport Arts Center where she is artistic director. The show, dedicated to the late Westport artist Susan Malloy, features work of 14 artists available for sale, some in multiple editions. Thirty percent of sales will go toward need-based scholarships for seniors at Staples High School. Opening reception is Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 44 Imperial Ave., with food, wine and music. Comings & Goings: Wheels Officially Opens

It’s been open since last fall, but today was the official ribbon cutting for the Wheels Convenience Store at 786 Post Road East owned by Trumbull-based Consumers Petroleum. Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe was joined by Gina Nero (c), marketing manager, and Luz Fonseca, store manager. The space was previous occupied by a Citgo gas and service station founded in the early 1930s by Joe DeMattia and owned by the Mattia family for 80 years. Nero said Wheels gets involved with each community it serves (there are 18 others in the state) and is a sponsoring participant in this summer’s 11th annual Connectiut Challenge bike ride in honor of cancer survivors.
