Garage Fire Blamed on Generator

WestportNow.com Image
Westport fire officials today blamed a fire Thursday at 10 Lookout Lane that extensively damaged a garage on a generator running during a power outage. All occupants escaped safely, but there was smoke throughout the house, which firefighters were able to remove with fans, said Assistant Chief Michael Kronick. He urged residents to always read and follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions before running generator, and, as carbon monoxide is emitted, never use a generator inside a home, garage, crawl space, or other enclosed areas. Also, never plug a generator directly into a home outlet and have a qualified electrician install a power transfer switch. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Westport Fire Department photo

Real Estate Report: Plenty Inventory Under $1 Million

By Judy Szablak

Special to WestportNow

Even though the average price of a home in Westport has been consistently hovering over $2.1 million, there are still plenty of options available under $1 million.

WestportNow.com Image
Featured Home: This home at 5 Evergreen Parkway is listed at $990,000. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Photo courtesy of Higgins Group Real Estate Westport

In fact, 22.7 percent of the current single-family inventory falls in that range.

On average, these 84 homes are priced at $799,883, and one could expect an average size home of 2,497-square feet.

The market is moving nicely in this price pocket as well, with 10 under the initial stage of deposit, another 27 scheduled to close, and 27 homes that have closed in just the past 90 days, which indicates an active market.

Unexpected Visitors at Library

The Westport Library today welcomed some unexpected visitors — about 60 second graders from the Western Connecticut Academy of International Studies, an elementary magnet school in Danbury. They were supposed to be at Sherwood Island State Park to perform science experiments and studies, but the wind and rain kept them from going. “So they called us, and we put up some tables and chairs,” said Rachel Reese, the library’s director of communications and marketing. “Lots of kiddos.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Contributed photo

Selectmen Decline to Approve New Signage Contract

By James Lomuscio

There was little sign of support today at the Westport Board of Selectmen to approve a $50,000 study to improve signage in the town, also known as “wayfinding.”

WestportNow.com Image

example why improved signage is needed. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

The board declined to act on the study costing $50,000 after there was no second to First Selectman Jim Marpe’s motion to approve the agreement.

“Then we rethink it,” Marpe said of the request made by Melissa Kane, co-chair of the Downtown Plan Implementation Committee on behalf of the Downtown Westport Master Plan.

The Board of Finance and the Representative Town Meeting had approved the appropriation in December and January.

Sewer Use Rate Jumps $25

Westporters with homes connected to sewers will pay an extra $25 on July 1 as the minimal sewer use charge goes from $325 to $350 with a unanimous vote today by the Board of Selectmen acting as the town’s Water Pollution Control Authority.

Public Works Director Stephen Edwards made the request, which translates into a rate of $6.10 per 100 cubic feet of effluent, saying that it will encourage homeowners to use less water the same way they would economize with any other utility.

When Selectman Avi Kaner asked why the town needed the increase, Edwards said that excess water usage “is taking up capacity of the sewage treatment plant.”

“It’s a very low price to pay to have the benefit of a sewer operation,” Edwards said.
