Jazz Jam at Arts Center

WestportNow.com Image
Today’s annual Jazz Jam at the Westport Arts Center was a spontaneous exploration of jazz, blues and other musical styles by some of the community’s best musicians. Students and semi-professionals were encouraged to bring their instrument of choice and join for free.  The Jazz Jam also celebrated Black History Month. Brian Torff, the Westport Arts Center’s artistic director for jazz, led the Jam on bass with fellow musician Greg Burrows on drums. The next performance in the WAC Jazz concert series is Greg Wall, “the Jazz Rabbi” on Sunday, March 5. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Phyllis Groner for WestportNow.com

Former Neighbor Recalls Car Into Water Victim

With a look of disbelief, Edward Fitzgerald of Norwalk today stared at the tire tracks leading to the Saugatuck River.

There on the breezy east bank awash in sunlight and the rhythmic sound of overhead traffic on the I-95 bridge, he couldn’t comprehend how his former neighbor might have mistaken a state boat launch for a bridge, if he did.

“It was such a shock,” said Fitzgerald upon reading that Richard Lamendola, 76, of Syosset, New York, died in the Saturday night incident that sent his car with him and his wife into the water.

“I knew him from when we lived in Syosset.”

Firefighters pulled her from the water, and a search was launched for her husband, according to emergency workers at the scene and a later police statement.

He was found floating in the river about an hour and five minutes after the first 911 call and was pronounced dead at Norwalk Hospital, police said. Police Sunday morning identified him as Richard Lamendola, 76, of Syosset, New York.

The drama began when diners from The Whelk Restaurant, 575 Riverside Ave., overlooking the water heard the woman’s screams and alerted police at 7:39 p.m.

Lori Cochran-Dougall (r), market director, helped Tynne Love (l) of Fairfield, and Katie Braja of Norwalk as they looked over the seeds. Said Cochran-Dougall: “It is estimated that up to 90 percent of our food derives from, or is dependent upon, seeds and that 80 percent of the world’s seeds are controlled by multinational corporations. Westport’s Top Cop Hasn’t Lost His Instinct for Bad Guys

Foti Koskinas may be Westport’s police chief, but he has not lost his touch as a street-smart cop.

That instinct for recognizing bad guys was at work Thursday—his 45th birthday—as Koskinas was at the Greens Farms Railroad station checking on some projects there.

In uniform but not wearing any body armor, he spotted a vehicle with a blinker on, engine idling, and the driver laid back in the seat

“The chief checked on the operator, and as the window rolled down, he immediately smelled the odor of marijuana,” said Lt. David Farrell.

“The victim paid Chirillo $32,579 in cash and checks since Oct. 8, 2016,” Farrell said. “As of mid-January, Chirillo had not started any work at the victim’s residence nor has he provided any of the material the victim has paid him for.”

Chirillo was held in lieu of a $75,000 bond, and he is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Tuesday, March 7.
