Ricardo Petrillo: dies in fall. Qunnipiac University photo
A 20-year-old 2003 Staples grad died early today after falling from a third-floor dormitory balcony at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, police said.

Ricardo Petrillo, who lived on campus, suffered head trauma after falling from the balcony at about 2:30 a.m. He was treated at the scene and brought to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he died a short time later, police said.

Police said they were investigating and did not release other details, such as the cause of the fall. University officials said the sophomore political science major lived in the dorm with the balcony from which he fell.

The university community was saddened to learn of Petrillo’s death this morning, said college spokesman John Morgan. He said the university was holding a service for Petrillo tonight and offering counseling services to affected students.

“He was a well-liked student whose presence on campus will be missed by his many friends, professors and classmates,” Morgan said.

The university did not release other information.

The Staples High School Class of 2003 mourns at the arrival of this tragic news. Many of us have been speaking by phone and via internet to share this news and other thoughts with each other, and all who learn of this sad event are shocked and deeply saddened by this loss. We all have fond memories of Ricardo and are keeping him and the Petrillo family in our thoughts and prayers.

As a student at Quinnipiac University and a recent graduate of Staples High School, I was shocked and saddened to hear the terrible news this morning. Him and his family are in my thoughts and prayers, and the Quinnipiac community as well.

This is really a tragic day. Ricardo was such a pleasant young man - one who was very active in theatre since middle school. He was very talented.

Ricardo was also extremely intelligent and caring. I was very sad to learn of Ricardo’s death. I extend my sincerest sympathies to Ricardo’s family.

Has there been any news regarding a memorial service or funeral? As a recent Staples grad and friend of his brothers, now attending school in Boston, I know there are a number of students who would be interested in attending.

My prayers go out to the family for this tragic lost.

Services will take place from 4:30-8 p.m. in Westport, Conn. Further details about location will be announced when arrangements are completed. I saw this on Quinnipiac’s web site. Deepest sympathy to the Petrillo family during this very sad and difficult time.

I watched Ricardo grow into a gifted actor and fine young man. I am saddened at the waste this loss is for all of us and especially for his family and friends. He will be missed.

We can’t belive this terrible tragedy. Ricardo stuck out in our minds as one of the nicest boys to walk through our door. We send our love and prayers to his family at this difficult time.
