“On the Verge” by Eric Overmyer runs through March 25 and is presented in association with Washington, D.C.’s Arena Stage. Artistic Director Tazewell Thompson will direct. The production is sponsored by Joanne Woodward and Ann Sheffer, board members.
“Joanne and Ann are very representative of the three exceedingly bold and courageous women in this play,” said Thompson.
“They are also ‘intrepid trekkers,’ who are unafraid of going against the wind and demonstrating their freedom to choose. They are both exemplary models of socially, politically and civic-minded citizens of Westport.
“Strong members of the board of trustees and passionate supporters of the educational segments of the Playhouse, they exemplify all women who have achieved—Supreme Court judges, doctors, CEOs, firefighters, professors, mothers—to be whatever they want to be.”
Originally produced in 1985 by Center Stage in Baltimore, and then by the Acting Company at the John Houseman Theater, New York, “On the Verge” has been staged by hundreds of theaters around the country.
In the play, three “sister sojourners” set off from middle America, 1888, on an exploratory trek to Terra Incognita. They learn, yearn for, and experience the future—often before it even happens.
The dialogue is a funny, musically conceived torrent of Victorian language and modern slang, overflowing with amusing puns and delicious alliterations. according to a Playhouse announcement.
The ladies become time travelers as they test their confidence, courage and limits in, as The New York Times said, “a frolicsome jaunt through a continuum of space, time, history, geography, feminism and fashion.”
Laiona Michelle, Tom Beckett, Susan Bennett and Molly Wright Stuart have been cast in the production.
Bennett starred as Joan Plowright in the long-running Off-Broadway hit, “Orson’s Shadow.” Beckett gained prominence for his appearance in Off-Broadway’s “Travels With My Aunt,” a performance which won him Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk awards.
Michelle received a Best Lead Actress Helen Hayes Award nomination in 2005 for “Yellowman” at Arena Stage and a Barrymore Award for “Constant Star” at Delaware Theatre Company. Stuart’s regional theatre credits include “Pride and Prejudice,” “The Underpants,” “The Servant of Two Masters,” “Henry V” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream. “
Set design is by Donald Eastman, costume design by Carrie Robbins, lighting design by Robert Wierzel and original music and sound design by Fabian Obispo.
