Town Clerk Issues Two Civil Union Licenses
Westport Town Clerk Patricia H. Strauss said today she issued two civil union licenses Saturday, the first day a new Connecticut law authorizing them went into effect.
“I was more than happy to be able to participate implementing this historic law,” Strauss said.
Connecticut Saturday became only the second state in the country, after Vermont, to allow same-sex civil unions and the first to extend civil union rights to its gay and lesbian residents without external pressure from the courts.
Strauss said one of the couples was united in a civil union ceremony Sunday by a Westport justice of the peace while the other couple planned a ceremony later this month.
