Thomas Edward Ochman of Fairfield, a former taxi driver in Westport, died Oct. 12 at home. He was 49.

Born June 22, 1963, he was a lifelong resident of Fairfield and a 1982 graduate of Ludlowe High School. He worked for his family’s business for 20 years before venturing out on his own as a limo driver.

In his 20s and 30s, he built stages and helped produce many shows for the Fairfield University Playhouse. He found joy later in his life by driving a taxi in Fairfield and Westport, telling all his life stories to anyone who was blessed to get him as a driver, his family said.

The family described him as “the kind of guy you only read about in novels. He lived a selfless life that depended only on the caring for others. He was lovingly called the Inn-Keeper of the Misfit Mansion. If you needed a place to stay, Tom’s door and his heart was always open.

“His love of cars, trucks and motorcycles was only matched by everyone’s love for him. If you needed something fixed, Tom was your man! You could often find him at St Mary’s By The Sea, hanging out with his buddies, or at his home away from home, Block Island. His amazing spirit inspired all of us to be generous, and loving, as he was.

“His large stature was misleading, as he was the most gentle giant to ever live.”

He was predeceased by his father Edward Ochman, mother Jean Lotsko, and grandmother Jenny Lotsko, he is survived by four siblings, his brothers Edward Ochman of Branford, and Joe Ochman of Los Angeles, his sisters Cynthia Ochman of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Linda Williamson of Vermont. He is also survived by his loving bird Chicken Paprikash and his faithful dog Oso, and countless friends.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Margaret’s Shrine, Bridgeport, on Friday, Oct. 19 at 10 a.m. A memorial service will be held on Block Island where his ashes will be spread Saturday Oct. 20 at noon.

In lieu of flowers, cards and donations to the memorial may be brought to the memorial or sent to The Thomas Ochman Memorial Fund, c/o Lucia Palmieri, 2539 Park Ave., Bridgeport, CT 06604.
