Westport-based The Alliance In Limiting Strays (TAILS) is the recipient of a state proclamation from Gov. M. Jodi Rell designating Feb. 28 as Spay Day in Connecticut.
The group will coordinate its fourth annual Spay Day event which, despite its name, is actually a month-long project highlighting the importance of spaying and neutering dogs and cats in Fairfield County.
Beginning Feb. 28, the group hopes to complete 140 dog and cat spay or neuters, host an evening of free pet care advice April 6, and have multiple visits at Choice Pet Supply stores.
“I am delighted to help TAILS and encourage all state residents to have their pet spayed or neutered,” said state Sen. Judith Freedman of Westport, who helped obtain the governor’s proclaimation.
“The numbers speak for themselves: more animals spayed or neutered means fewer animals entering into our already overburdened shelter system.”
TAILS, which says it is committed to helping reduce high euthanasia rates and the suffering of pets due to overpopulation, is seeking monetary donations as well as items that can be sold through the group’s eBay fund-raiser.
Spay Day, which is part of Doris Day Animal Foundation’s nationwide Spay Day 2006, relies on local veterinarians, businesses and individuals to offset the cost associated with spay/neutering.
As part of its Spay Day activities, TAILS will hold a pet care question and answer session Thursday, April 6 at 7 p..m. in Norwalk City Hall.
The forum will feature a panel of animal care and training experts who will discuss and take audience questions about companion animals.
TAILS will also be making visits to Choice Pet Supply stores Saturday, March 5 in Fairfield at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the Connecticut Avenue store in Norwalk Sunday, March 12 at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
