Staples Boys Soccer Roars Into FCIAC Finals

The FCIAC final will pit Staples against Ridgefield.  The game is set for Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Norwalk High School’s Testa Field.

While the Wreckers defeated Greenwich, No. 2 Ridgefield shut out Bridgeport’s Central 3-0.

“This should be a great game,” said Staples head coach Dan Woog.  “We beat Ridgefield a couple of weeks ago, but they’re on a hot streak.”

Staples is shooting for its second consecutive FCIAC championship, third in four years, and 26th overall.

Staples makes its second straight championship appearance, and third in four years.  They won last year (3-1 over Greenwich), and tied Trumbull 0-0 in 2006.

Fitzgerald is a stalwart defender, but he has been dangerous all year on set plays.

In the 53rd minute against Greenwich at Fairfield Ludlowe High School, Mikey Scott worked a short corner kick with Drew McNair. Scott got the ball back, beat one defender, then laced a ball across the goalmouth.  Fitzgerald was there to power it home.

Head coach Dan Woog called the win “a true team effort.” He cited goalkeeper Michael McCarthy, who made several different saves in heavy traffic, along with the “nearly impenetrable” defense of Fitzgerald, Jack Hennessy, Frankie Bergonzi, Sean Gallagher and Steven Denowitz.

Woog described central midfielders Alan Reiter and Brendan Lesch as “maestros,” adding that flank defenders McNair and Scott played excellently on both sides of the ball.

Mike White and Greg Gudis attacked ferociously, while Matteo Marzoli added both “toughness and touch.”
