Quick police work today led to the arrest of a 26-year-old New York man who allegedly attempted to shoplift items from a Westport pharmacy and then tried to avoid capture by attempting to run down an officer and flee on foot.

Police said at 10:24 a.m. a man later identified as Akinola Ebanks of the Bronx was spotted by an employee at CVS Pharmacy, 397 Post Road East, attempting to shoplift items. When confronted, he discarded several packages hidden in his clothing and fled, police said.

After checking a surveillance tape, a description of the suspect was broadcast to other officers, one of whom spotted him in a vehicle at the rear of HomeGoods, 1817 Post Road East, police said.

Officers approached the vehicle and ordered the driver out of the car, police said. After initially appearing to comply, the suspect started the vehicle and drove at an officer, causing him to dive out of the way to avoid being struck.

The suspect then drove the vehicle at a high rate of speed through the adjacent Stop & Shop lot and then fled the vehicle on foot, police said. Officers pursued the suspect on foot for a short distance until taking him into custody near the Goodwill Store, 1572 Post Road East.

Ebanks was charged with attempted larceny, attempted assault on a police officer, interfering with an officer, reckless driving, and engaging police in pursuit. He was held on $25,000 bond pending a court appearance, police said.
