Robert H. Smith
Robert H. Smith, Jr., a former Westport resident, died Dec. 18 at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach, Fla.
He had lived alone since the death of his wife Marilyn, who died in 2007. After graduating from the Taft School in Connecticut, he attended Yale University until the family business called for his help.
He ran the family mechanical contracting business for 49 years. He also found time to be the commodore of the Saugatuck Harbor Yacht Club in Westport, commodore of the Harborside Yacht Club, president of Windmill Club in Armonk, N.Y., and president of the Moorings Club in Vero Beach.
He was also on the board of the River Mews Condo Association for 12 years serving as president for most of those years.
An avid yachtsman, he and his wife made 10 round trips on their trawler, Bolyn, between their northern home in Westport, and Vero Beach.
After spending 25 years in The Moorings, the couple moved into Regency Park, a senior living development, also in Vero Beach.
He is survived by a daughter, Brooke Guiney and four stepchildren - Christopher Murray, Diane Nydick, Allison Boender and Wayne Murray. His five children presented him with 15 grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Blvd., Vero Beach, followed by a gathering of family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution to VNA Hospice House Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960-4801, would be greatly appreciated.
