Peter E. Spangenberg, formerly of Monroe and Westport, died Dec. 24.

He was born in Westport to the late Ivan and Helen (Lyon) Spangenberg.

A 1950 graduate of Staples High School, he attended Brown University and the Bridgeport Engineering Institute. He loved to design and build machines, some of which were patented (his first patent was filed at age 19).

He was employed at Barnes Engineering and led teams of engineers, developing aerospace technology including satellite stability systems. Later while employed at Perkin Elmer, he worked on the Hubbell Space Telescope. After retiring, he spent winters with his wife, Mary, golfing, relaxing on the beach and enjoying many great friends in Naples, Fla.

He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Mary Magill Spangenberg. In addition to his brother, Ivan Spangenberg, III of Wilton, he is survived by his four children and their spouses, Lisa and David Ladasky of Oxford, Peter and Tina Spangenberg of Wethersfield, James and Kathleen Spangenberg of Monroe, and Susan Mahard of Meriden; also six grandchildren, Christopher and David Oakes, Tyler and Becky Mahard, and Andrew and Katherine Mae Spangenberg.

Family and friends are invited to attend a service on Saturday, Dec. 29 at noon at the Christ & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 75 Church Lane, Westport. Everyone is asked to gather directly at church. Burial will be at Willowbrook Cemetery in Westport.
