Kenneth D. Brummel, 77
Kenneth D. Brummel of Palm Springs, Calif., a former principal of Westport’s Bedford Junior High School and superintendent of schools, died Dec. 29. He was 77.

Born in Holland, Mich. in 1935, he was a respected teacher and leader in the education field. Upon graduation from Michigan State University in 1957, he began his career as an English teacher in the Detroit school system working at the junior high school level.
In 1959, he received his master’s degree in secondary education from Harvard and settled in Oak Park, Ill. where he taught English and eventually became assistant principal of Glenbrook South High School in Glenbrook, Ill.
He joined the Westport school system in 1964, when he was named principal of Bedford Junior High School. His tenure in Westport was marked by his 12-year engagement as superintendent, during which he was a strong advocate for student achievement and educational advancement while setting high standards for teacher aptitude and preparedness.
He received his doctorate from Columbia Teachers College in 1979. After leaving Westport, he served as superintendent in Grosse Pointe, Mich. as well as Orange County and Lancaster, Calif. Throughout his long and distinguished career, he was a proponent of new ideas and methodologies for school administration and educational instruction.
He also served his community and his profession as a volunteer and leader in organizations ranging from the Kiwanis Club to the National School Boards Association.
He retired from the education field in 1992 and has been involved in small business in the Pasadena, Laguna Beach and Palm Springs areas since 1993.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine Brummel and their children, Lisa, Beth, and Peter. He was the proud grandfather of Jennifer, Amelia, Owen, and Jack. He is also survived by his long-time business partner, Darnell Harrison II.
Private arrangements for burial have been made by the family. A Celebration of life for Ken will be held in Palm Springs in the near future.
