John W. Honeycomb, 85
John W. Honeycomb of Naples, Fla., a former Westport resident, died Jan. 21 at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, Palm Coast, Fla. He was 85.
Born in Schenectady, N.Y, the only son of Clyde and Vera Honeycomb, he was a 1949 graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
He worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford until he left to join IBM in 1961. His 27 years at IBM were spent with the real estate and construction division, overseeing IBM construction of facilities around the world.
His love for sailing began when he was in High School in Newport, R.I. and it continued during his many years living in Westport. He also enjoyed skiing with his family at Okemo Mountain in Ludlow, Vt.
In later years he spent many hours bicycle riding, not only on Marco Island but doing lengthy trips in the United States and Europe.
In 1988, he moved with his wife, Betty to Marco Island where he continued with his boating and proceeded to get his real estate license. Over the years he worked at Harborview Realty, Marco Beach Realty, Prudential Realty and Anchor Realty.
He was active on various committees for the Marco Island Board of Realtors. While on Marco, he served several years as chairman of the Board of Trustees of United Church.
In 2010, the couple moved to Aston Gardens in Naples.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lynn White of San Diego, Calif.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Barbara (Richard); grandchildren, Robert and Connor of Sandy Hook, Conn.,; son, Jeffrey (Catherine); grandchildren, Megan Honeycomb, Kellen Tucker, Megan and Caity Tucker of Portland, Maine; son, Stephen (Jill); granddaughter, Paige of Glastonbury, Conn.; and great-grandson, Ezio Honeycomb of Portland, Maine; his sister, Helen Lasher lives in Tuscon, Ariz; and sister, Joyce Schutz in Plant City, Fla.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2, at 10 a.m. at United Church of Marco Island, 320 North Barfield Drive, Marco Island.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Church or to Save the Children, 52 Wilton Road, Westport, CT, 06880.
