John M. DeCola of the Sandy Hook area of Newtown, a former Westport resident, died Dec. 25 at Danbury Hospital. He was 84.

The husband of Christina (Hudson) DeCola, he was born in Westport on July 4, 1928 a son of the late Michele and Angelina (Gillardi) DeCola. He was a 1947 graduate of Staples High School where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball.

For many years, he played sports in the Norwalk Industrial Leagues. In the 1980s, he was named Westport Sportsman of the Year. He was a member of the Oak Hill Golf Association in Norwalk.

He was a longtime employee of the Edwards Company of Norwalk and then was employed by Jared Manufacturing as purchasing agent.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Michelle Morrison of Southbury; a brother, Roger DeCola of Venice, Fla., and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Elizabeth DeCola Esposito, Grace DeCola Chimanto, and Helen DeCola Sanford.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Rose of Lima Church, Newtown, on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.
