Henry W. Coley III, 86

Henry Wakeman Coley III of Sunderland, Vt., a former Westport resident, died Dec. 4 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. He was 86.

Born Feb. 7, 1926 in Norwalk, he was the son of Lucy Langzettel and Henry W. Coley Jr. Growing up in Westport, he graduated from Staples High School in 1944 at which time he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

After serving four years, he continued his education, receiving a BS degree from Johnson Sate College and master degree from Union College and Michigan State College.

He was married to Janice Vaughn in 1955 with whom he had three children. She died in 1969. Later in 1974, he married Thelma Jolivette.

Hank taught math for three years at Ben-Hi, then nine years at Arlington High School where he also taught physical education and coached variety of sports.

While in Arlington, he played with the Arlington Generals. He then went on to teach math at Mt. Anthony Union High School for 27 years, heading the department for his last 12 years there, retiring in 1992.

A Red Cross swimming instructor for many years, he gave instructions in Pownal, North Bennington and Arlington.

A longtime member of the Arlington Lions Club, joining in 1957, he was given a lifetime membership.

Always civic minded, he served on the Sunderland Planning Commission, as well as serving as both town and school moderator.

He was instrumental in the construction and development of the Arlington Recreational Park where he served as director of day to day operations. Member of United way from 1991-1995; chairman of Trustees at the Federated Church of East Arlington from 1991-1994.

His favorite pasttimes were bird hunting with his English Setters (to which each one was given the name Shaker); fly fishing and gardening.

He leaves his wife Thelma of Sunderland; his son John and wife Julie Coley of Jackson, N.Y., daughter Ann Pickrell and husband Doug Reed of Chesterfield, Mass., granddaughters Britney and Mariah Coley of Jackson, N.Y., two half brothers William Coley of Orange, Conn., and Gary Starbuck of Eagar, Ariz.,

He was predeceased by his daughter Jill Coley in 1987, brother Charles and sister Margaret.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 11 a.m. at the Federated Church of East Arlington, a reception will follow.

Private burial with military honors will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery.
