Final Bedford Funding Due from the State
By
The Westport Board of Education took action tonight so state officials can release the final $2 million grant money remaining on the Bedford Middle School construction project.
Assistant Superintendent Nancy Harris said there were a number of problems that needed to be fixed before the school was officially complete, but they are now resolved.
She can now submit the project as completed to state officials so the final funding can be released, she said.
Included in the issues were regrouting the kitchen and locker room floors, which were done before the school was opened, she said.
There were other issues, however, that took longer, including indoor air quality issues in the windowless rooms, she said.
“We were meeting code, but it was more about the comfort level of the people in the rooms,” she said.
Another issue was the front doors to the school, which until this year never seemed to close right, she said.
School officials are receiving a state grant of 20.7 percent of the total project amount, which was $38 million, Harris said.
It works out to a $7 million state grant, she said, of which between $4.5 million and $5 million has already been paid to the town.
The money has not really been delayed because of how the loans for the project are paid back, she said.
“We do need to wrap this up now,” she said.
Jack Klinge, RTM District 7, who has substitute taught at Bedford, said there are several classrooms where the heating is uneven during the winter and it is too cold.
He suggested school administrators speak with teachers to make sure all of the problems are fixed before moving forward.
Schools Superintendent Elliott Landon said he is sure there are some teachers with complaints still, but he relies on the principal, who was the first one to jump on him about the heating and air quality problems when the school opened.
“It has not been an issue in the last year,” he said. “Everyone just has their own comfort level.”
