Edward John Turchan, 83, of Salem, the husband of Elva Rubright Turchan, died July 21, Beechwood Manor in New London. At one point in his career in education, he had been a guidance counselor at Staples High School.

Born June 23, 1927, in Trafford, Pa., he was the son of the late Michael and Emma Bucho Turchan. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was married Aug. 19, 1952, to Elva in Trafford, Pa.

He earned B.S. and M.A. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and his C.A.G.S. from Boston University. He was a teacher and guidance counselor in Youngsville, Pa., and guidance counselor at Staples.

Turchan also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, the Hope Center Drug Rehab in Bridgeport and trained at the Drug Dependence Institute at Yale University.

He was a member of American Personnel and Guidance Association, the Connecticut School Counselor Association, the National Education Association and the Connecticut Retired Teachers Association. He was chairman of the Trumbull Action Committee as well as being active with establishment of the Beacon House in Trumbull.

Turchan also was an active member of the Uncasville United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by two children and their spouses, Victor and Josephine Turchan of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, and Cynthia and Brian Thomas of Salem; five grandchildren, Brian Meath and his wife, Dara; Jessica Cardinale and her husband, Joe, and Heather, Dylan and Cole Thomas; two great-grandchildren, Emma and Mia Cardinale; his sister and brother-in-law, Jean Pultan and Glenn Rubright; and other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Congregational Church of Salem, 244 Hartford Road (Route 85), Salem ,with the Rev. Eric Swanfeld, officiating. Burial will follow in the Salem Green Cemetery.
