Bruce Winstead Patalano of Wheeling, W. Va., a former Westport resident, died Jan. 16 at home. He was 67.

He was born Aug. 15, 1945 in Rocky Mount, N.C., and grew up in Westport, the son of Philip V. Patalano and the late Sudia Winstead Patalano.

He graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1967 and moved to West Virginia as a two-year VISTA Volunteer working in the Weirton area. He was then a social worker with the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services working for years in Child Protection Services.

He continued his education, obtaining a Master’s Degree in psychiatric social work through West Virginia University, Morgantown.

He was a strong believer in the power of a helping hand. He was an active member of his community in Wheeling for 44 years. He was a volunteer and supporter of Wheeling’s Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center, St. Michael’s Church and Vineyard Christian Fellowship.

He believed in the power of ideas. An avid reader, he often shared his books and thoughts to help others.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his younger brother Benjamin Harrison Patalano. He is survived by his father Philip V. Patalano of Norwalk, brother, Philip James Patalano and sister- in- law Martha, of Sao Tome, his sister Paula Marie Patalano, of Norwalk, and his niece and nephews: Steven Vincent Patalano of Bridgeport, Danielle Christine deBouver, Kyle Benjamin deBouver of Fairfield, Philip Armand Patalano of Altadena, Calif., and Jason Winstead Patalano of Sao Tome and Principe.

He is also remembered by many friends and the Randolph family who he loved and considered to be his “extended family.”

A service was held on Jan. 21 in Wheeling with burial later at Assumption Cemetery in Westport.

Memorial contributions may be made to Youth Services Systems or Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center.
