The artist has a colorful assemblage of original collages, giclee prints and hand-collaged furniture. The exhibition showcases the artist’s sense of style and her talent in using found materials to create vibrant works of art.
Materials used in her collages range from buttons, watchbands and pearl earrings to torn pages of The New York Times, timber, and hand-made paper.
While making her collages, she cuts and tears a combination of items into a variety of shapes, and layers each piece until it suits her artistic vision.
“I keep layering until the work speaks to me,” she said. “I don’t stop working until it feels right.”
“I’ve been interested in art and have enjoyed painting since I was in high school. But it wasn’t until I started taking a series of classes at the 92nd Street Y in New York that it all came together.”
Her studies included silk-screening and stained-glass-making courses at Cornell University. She followed up with watercolor, pastel and collage classes at the 92nd Street Y.
Cooper has a keen eye for design, said Westport-based art consultant Marco Pelletier.
“Judy’s work is different,” he said. “She works in a medium that is new to the art world, yet it appeals to my corporate and private clients. Her work is very fresh. It is colorful, but also uplifting. Judy’s work will warm up the walls of any home.”
Pelletier is the former owner of Gallerie Je Reviens, which was based in Westport for 15 years. The gallery closed its doors last year following the death of Pelletier’s partner, Rodney Gralnick.
Ken Warren, owner of Westport River Gallery, said he is pleased to host Cooper’s first exhibition.
“This is a hidden treasure of work,” he said. “Judy’s work is new to this area and it will be a treat to show it to the community.”
Cooper’s collages and large-size giclees are extension of a line of note cards she developed several years ago. The cards have been on sale exclusively in New York City, where Cooper resides.
Westport River Gallery will be open from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, and noon to 5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 15. Call (203) 226-6934.
Cooper’s work can be seen on her Web site.
