Albert Anthony Mansi of Easton, a former Town of Westport Public Works Department employee, died at home on Jan. 3. He was 91.

He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Pantaleone Mansi, one of seven children. He was the widower of Elizabeth Bagon Mansi.

Born in Bridgeport, he graduated from Central High School, class of 1938. He had a lifelong passion for all sports. He was captain of the Central HS All-State Basketball championship team and a star soccer goalie.

He continued playing basketball throughout his life, still shooting baskets into his 80s. His athletic prowess on the basketball court was noted by the Stars and Stripes newspaper and American Armed Forces TV, in Germany, and an article in The New York Times.

He later enjoyed coaching youth basketball teams that went on to state championships. He met the man who invented basketball, James Naismith, a fact he was always happy to share. He won the Connecticut Senior Olympics twice in his age bracket.

He was a member of the Army Air Force during World War II, using his keen eye to help train soldiers to hit their marks. He was a member of the American Legion and also served as a Justice of the peace.

He was a member of Local Union 173, Plumbers and Steamfitters, where he held various officer positions, including Business Agent for the members. When he retired from the union, he worked for the Town of Westport, in the Public Works department.
He was a devout Catholic and enjoyed the church communities at Sacred Heart Chapel and Notre Dame of Easton. He was a major sports fan, particularly of the UCONN Huskies and the New York Yankees.

He was a member of the Honorable Menschen and the Greater Bridgeport Old Timer’s Athletic Association, two groups he enjoyed very much during his later years. His optimistic spirit and loving family were all that he needed to keep him thriving over these past 91 years.

He is survived by his brother, Armando Mansi of Stratford; his daughters, Carol Crikelair and her husband David of Darien, and Janis McNutt and her husband Jan of Ellicott City, Md., his grandchildren Diane Cavuoto and Cari Cavuoto, who reside in Arizona, Dane Iovino of Boston, Terry Crikelair and his wife Andrea of Greenwich, Matthew Crikelair and his wife Nora of Glen Rock, N.J., Pamela Garrity and her husband Ryan of Jupiter, Fla., Chelsea and Hayley McNutt of Ellicott City, Md., and Alexis McNutt of Verona, N.J. and 11 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years and his daughter, Sharon Iovino.

Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Monday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m directly in Notre Dame of Easton Church, 640 Morehouse Road, Easton. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.
