The middle son of Mildred and Jacob Doniger, he is survived by his brothers Alfred and Steve. He lived in Westport from 1961 to1979.

He was a graduate of Great Neck High School, Yale University (’49) and Harvard Law School (’52). He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He served as a corporate attorney for several companies, including Rheingold Brewery and retired as chief counsel with American Home Products.

He also served as a judge at the Taxi and Limousine Commission of New York. He was involved with many charities and served on the board of Camp Ramapo, Rhinebeck, N.Y.

He was the husband of Marjorie Doniger, father of Jon (Wendy), Dan (Rafiqua), Sue (Rene) and Nancy (Jim) from his marriage to his first wife Audrey; and grandfather of Max, Lily, Jeremy, and Raphael.

All four Doniger children attended Green’s Farms Elementary, Long Lots, and Staples High School.

He was an outstanding tennis player, who had a regular weekend game at Longshore, Erwin Mach’s, and Centre Court. Three generations of Doniger men have had their hair cut at Compo Barber’s from Tommy, and
Alan would still return there even when he lived in New York City.

He had an incredibly sharp wit and a great mind for history. He loved food, travel, his family, and New York City. He was tenacious in life and dealing with his challenges from pancreatic cancer, his family said.

A local memorial service will be announced soon.

Alan’s son Dan, a leading hospice nurse, lovingly led his end of life care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Hospice, 1740 Eastchester Road, Bronx, N.Y.
