He was born on April 29, 1926 in Fitchburg, Mass., the third of seven children to the late Kathleen and Francis Charlton. He was married to and well-cared for by Jay Charlton, his loving, red-headed wife of 53 years.
After graduating from St. Bernard’s High School in Fitchburg, he served in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. Because of the G.I. Bill, he attended Holy Cross College, graduating in 1948 and in 1952 finished his law degree at Georgetown University.
He was an attorney for more than 50 years, practicing law in Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut. Until last year, he was a magistrate judge in Norwalk and Bridgeport.
He had a quick wit and loved entertaining his family and friends with his sweet Irish tenor voice. He was often seen sitting in his favorite chair reading the daily papers while watching sports. He especially supported the New England teams and women’s sports.
He also loved playing golf at Longshore in Westport and was very proud of shooting two holes-in-one over his golfing career.
He is survived by his wife, Jay Charlton; their three children, Craig Charlton of Chicago, Susan Wallace of Madison, and Kathy Lee of Fairfield; his daughter Sally Barnes of Montana; six grandchildren, Nicole and Emily Charlton, Max, Sean and Hayden Lee, and Rose Wallace; and a sister, Joan Laverty of Norwood, Mass.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kathy Lee, 111 Euclid Ave., Fairfield, CT 06825 for a Frank Charlton Memorial Bench at Longshore or to the ALS Recovery Fund, One Grove Isle Dr., Coconut Grove, FL 33133 http://www.alsrecovery.org in honor of his family members affected by this disease.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Luke Church in Westport.
