Louis I. Cohen of Bridgeport, a former Westport resident for 43 years, died Dec. 18 at The Jewish Home for the Elderly of Fairfield. He was 91.
Born in Bridgeport, a son of the late Max and Bessie (Sandlovitz) Cohen. he was a graduate of the Wharton Business School, and served in the U S Army during World War II under Gen. George Patton and Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, as a first lieutenant commanding the 150mm Howitzer Division of the 3rd Army.
In 1950, he founded the firm of Cohen and Engelson, certified public accountants, and was instrumental in building the North End Talmud Torah on Main Street in Bridgeport.
He was a contributor at the Jewish Home for the Elderly, and a lover of music and the arts. He adored his family and greatly loved his close circle of friends, his family said.
He is survived by his wife Helga (Oliven) Cohen, his son, Jan Cohen and his wife Melody, grandchildren, Jason Max and Morgan Rose, his sister Frances Berkowitz and her husband Israel, sisters-in-law, Lillian Cohen, Lenore Cohen and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, George and Milton Cohen.
Services will take place on Thursday, Dec. 20 at 11 a.m. from The Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home 88 Beach Road, Fairfield, with interment following at Loyalty Cemetery on Burroughs Road.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Jewish Home for the Elderly of Fairfield. Shiva will be observed at the home of Jan and Melody Cohen in Fairfield.
