Raymond E. Walch, 88
Raymond E. Walch, a former principal of Westport’s Staples High School, died Oct. 21 in Palm City, Fla. He was 88.
He was born in Waterbury on March 18, 1924, the son of Roy and Edith Walch. Extended road trips were popular in the Walch household, and by the time he turned age 13, he had traveled to all the lower 48 states and Mexico.
His education at Middlebury College was interrupted to serve two years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, where he trained to become a navigator/bombardier. With the war’s conclusion, he returned to Middlebury College, and graduated with the class of 1946.
He married his wife of 62 years, Marion Hubbell of Norwalk in 1950, and began his teaching career in Norwalk. The family then moved to Westport in 1960, where he became director of mathematics for the Westport school system, and founded of the Westport Credit Union.
In 1965, he was appointed principal of Staples High School but resigned less than a year later ro return to teaching. He later taught college mathematics and became a consultant and author of two series of mathematics textbooks for the Scott Foresman publishing company.
A tournament level chess player, he also enjoyed golfing, travel, parties, and family reunions. He is fondly remembered as the “life of the party,” his family said.
He is survived by his wife, Marion Walch, of Stuart, Fla. and his older brother, Harold G. Walch, of Waldoboro, Maine.
He is also survived by his five children: son Wayne Walch and wife Aline of Southington; Frank Walch and wife Laurie Styles of Monkton, Vt.; son Peter Walch and wife Karen of Ellington, Conn.; daughter Susan Walch of Fairfield, Iowa; and son Harry Walch and wife Andrea of Palm City. He also leaves 10 grandchildren.
