Arthur Bleemer, 84
UPDATE (adds memorial service) Arthur Bleemer of Westport and Truro, Mass., a former educator in the Westport school system and member of the Westport Public Library board, died Oct. 20 after what his family said was a long and noble struggle with lymphoma brain cancer. He was 84.
He grew up in Bradley Beach, N.J., son of Rose and David Bleemer, brother of the late Norman Bleemer. He graduated from Rutgers University, and received his Master’s Degree and Professional Diploma in Guidance and Administration from Teacher’s College, Columbia University.
He served in the U.S. Army as an instructor in the Psychological Warfare School at Ft. Bragg, N.C., during the Korean War.
He was an administrator in the Chappaqua, N.Y., Westport, and Darien, schools. A Westport resident since 1963, he served on the Westport Public Library Board and was involved in the expansion of the Long Lots Middle School building and the Westport Library.
He was an innovative educator, an early advocate for teaming in middle schools, his family said. He was a compassionate and inspiring leader, admired by the many teachers whose lives he touched, and remembered fondly by many of his students.
He was a board member of the Fairfield County Retired Teachers Association and worked diligently for the rights of Connecticut state educators. He was on the staff of Sacred Heart University as a supervisor for student teaching and worked for many years for Co-operative Educational Services.
He loved travel and spent much time with his wife abroad and in the United States. He enjoyed reading history books, dancing, Corn Hill on Cape Cod, his dog, Shadow, jazz and swing, apples, and most of all, his family.
He is survived by his wife of almost 59 years, the romance of his life, Barbara (nee Perkel). They met on the beach in New Jersey in 1950. Also survived by his children Nancy , Jill (Seth Weitzman) and Jonathan (Angela) and his grandchildren, Jason, Emily, Meredith, Charlotte, Danny and Andrew.
A memorial service originally set for Nov. 4 was rescheduled because of Storm Sandy to Sunday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. at Temple Israel in Westport.
Contributions can be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York; the Southern Poverty Law Center, or Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
