Victor K. Koechl, 82
Victor Karl Koechl of Wilton died July 5 at Norwalk Hospital of complications from pancreatic cancer. He was 82.
Born in New York City on March 3, 1928, to Charlotte Trowbridge Koechl and Paul Koechl, he spent his early childhood in Europe, then moved to the Boston area and attended Andover, Harvard University and the Harvard School of Design, from which he attained a master’s degree in architecture.
Upon graduation, Koechl worked for the architectural firm Kahn and Jacobs in Manhattan. His first big assignment there was as a project manager on the construction of the American Airlines terminal at Kennedy Airport.
He moved to Wilton in 1965 and practiced residential and commercial architecture, first in partnership with Thomas E. Bates, and then with Lynedon S. Eaton and Helen May.
He spent many happy times with his mother and stepfather, John Marshall, at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Study and Conference Center in Bellagio, Italy, where John was the resident director.
After retiring in the mid 1990s, Koechl enjoyed daily walks at Compo Beach with friends and sailing his beloved Ensign, BEM, in Norwalk Harbor. He also worked part-time as a sedimentation and erosion inspector for the Westport Conservation and Planning and Zoning Departments.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Cooper; his daughter, Penelope Koechl and her partner, Colin Neenan; and his cat, Abigail.
A celebration of life gathering is being planned for family and close friends.
Donations in his name may be made to any charity that helps animals or the environment.
